This coffee, and the others from Agricafes Sol de Manana program represent to me the real power of specialty coffee, where with a little help from those with greater market access a producer is able to realise greater value from their work and grow their families opportunities.
Vicente Paye was one of the first 10 producers in the pilot program and continues to improve his amazing coffee which I’ve been enjoying for over 10 years. In a country like Bolivia where land tenure and economic stability have been real historic challenges, particularly in respect to coffee, these are huge achievements.
This is a traditional Washed Caturra from Bolivia, a delicious, balanced, well rounded coffee, that drips with quality and sweetness.
Producer: Vicente Paye
Variety: Caturra
Location: Copacabana, Bolivia
Process: Washed
+ Broader Context
The colony of Copacabana has a collection of small farms that are each around five hectares in size (Vicente has ten hectares). The farms range over an altitude of 1,300 to 1,700 metres above sea level (m.a.s.l.), and they benefit from an average annual temperature between 15 and 26°C. These traditional farms use no chemicals or pesticides and follow the principles of organic farming not because of certification but because they want to look after their farms and land in the best way they possibly can.
The main harvest runs from May to September, peaking around July and August. The cherries are handpicked when they're fully ripe, and they're then delivered to Agricafes Buena Vista mill, where they are fully washed.
Bolivia is a challenging origin and continues to go through challenging times, particularly in rural areas: dwindling crops, ageing plants, lack of varietal diversity, and ageing producers with children who have little to no interest in carrying on the family business. But then there are people like Vincent who are doing wonderful work to buck that trend. He's been planting new stock, working hard alongside his family, and increasing his yield – as well as increasing the quality of his coffee.
This coffee is part of the sustainability project Sol de la Mañana, which is run by our exporters Agricafe. With their help, Vincent has been able to increase production, quality, and earnings, and access and develop a long-term buying relationship, creating future stability and certainty. In 2019 Sol de la Mañana won the SCA Award for Most Sustainable Business Model.
+ Roast & Brewing Information
This is a medium roast coffee, and will make a fantastic all day drinking mug of filter, as well as an espresso thats delicious as is, or as the base for a milk drink. As filter the heavier, chocolatey side of the coffee comes to the fore, as espresso the acidity will be higher, bringing a touch of lime, but in balance if using a traditional recipe
Espresso 19:38g 28-30s
Filter 24:400g 3:30s
